I’ll start with a quote from an article I read:

Minnesota Senator Al Franken–over the objection of fully 30 Republicans–authored and passed legislation Wednesday restricting military contractors from bidding “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.” Yes, they had to pass a law for that.

The whole situation that prompted this legislation sickens me, and good on Franken for working to correct it.

What I’d like to comment on is this paragraph:

The Senate voted for the amendment 68-30. The 30 Senators that think Halliburton subsidiary KBR ought to be allowed to deny its female employees access to the legal system when they are raped by its male employees are, naturally, all Republican and include: Jones’ Senator John Cornyn; the philandering Christian John Ensign; noted prostitution enthusiast David Vitter; gynecologist and anti-abortion advocate Tom Coburn; personhood-for-fetuses advocate Sam Brownback; women’s “health” advocate John McCain; and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

I’m definitely in the pro-life camp. I do think it’s a fair question, however, to ask why someone who wouldn’t want a raped woman to abort a baby why they also wouldn’t want the woman to be able to pursue justice for being raped in the first place. And I don’t even want to get started on the damage done when someone can be labeled a “philandering Christian.”

Nonsense like this is why I no longer support either political party. You can see how your senators voted here. I intend to ask Georgia’s senators why they voted against this amendment.

Make your own here.

For the past two years Amber and I have had a Halloween party. It’s been a blast. But now it’s time to start planning this year’s costume.

We tend towards themes for a couple of us. Two years ago I was Napolean, Amber was Pedro (!) and Lyndsey was Deb. Last year I was Mojo Jojo, and Amber, Lyndsey, and our friend Shannon were Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively.

Two months out, and I’m at a loss. I guess we don’t have to do a theme again, but it’s a lot of fun.

On a side note, I used to wonder about these people who put so much time and effort into their costumes. Now I get it: It’s just a lot of fun. As I told Amber at dinner tonight, a year later I’m still not sure if my Mojo Jojo costume was a success or not, but it was funny, and I’d totally do it again.

Living by faith

For a Christian, my life doesn’t show much faith.

I recently listened to the audio version of the book Crazy Love, by Francis Chan. In it one of the questions he asks is, What in your life requires faith? In other words, what are you doing that would be impossible if God didn’t show up?

I was listening to this on the way to Greenville, SC, so I had a lot of time to think about this. The answer I came up with was simply, “Nothing, really.” I do lots of things, but for the most part they are things anyone could do. There’s nothing that particularly marks my life as a life lived by faith.

To understate it: This is a problem.

I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit since then. Amber and I have had a couple of conversations about this, and what we can do to fix this lack in my life. I hope to write more about that soon, but for now, I’d like to suggest you ask yourself the same question, and go where it leads you.
